Originally one of the oldest hunting methods, then an effective weapon in combat, it has developed into a real trend sport in recent years: archery.
Archery
Many people try their hand at archery in their free time, not just for fun, but also to condition numerous muscle groups and train concentration. But is a bow the same as a bow and is it always just about shooting the arrow into the center of a target? Here is a brief overview of the different types of archery today.

Traditional and simple
Anyone who has Robin Hood and similar characters in mind when thinking of a bow has the so-called Longbow in mind. It is the oldest and most traditional form of bow. Made from straight or curved wood and strung with a string made from animal intestine, plant fibers or, nowadays, modern plastics, it is available in its original form without any additional attachments such as arrow rests or bow windows or with corresponding operating aids.
The longbow is the favorite of LARP and medieval fans, but many sports archers also love the fascination of this bow that requires few technical aids. It is used in what is known as instinctive shooting, where the archer does not aim the arrow precisely, but concentrates fully on the target when drawing and shooting. The arrow is therefore not released in a calculated and well-considered manner, but "instinctively."
Recurve bow – precise and widely used
Consists of several parts Recurve bows The two wooden limbs, which draw the string in a similar way to a longbow, are attached to a middle section made of high-quality plastic with an arrow rest and bow window.
Sights are also sometimes attached. The ends of the limbs are bent forward, which allows for increased energy transfer to the arrow. Since the recurve bow can be disassembled, the archer has no problems transporting it. If after a while a stronger bow is desired, there is also the option of just replacing the limbs.
Compound bow – technical improvement
A technical development is the compound bowIt also consists of a middle section and two limbs, but the string is guided over additional pulleys at the ends, which leads to a significant increase in the energy transferred to the arrow without the archer having to cope with a high pulling load. Arrow speeds of 330 km/h can be achieved effortlessly, which is why the compound bow is often used in countries where hunting with a bow is permitted, unlike in Germany.
The goal makes the difference
Shooting at standardized targets is the most popular form of archery and has been an Olympic discipline since 1972.
In recent years, recreational shooters have increasingly discovered 3D shooting. This involves completing a course with foam animal dummies, on which the target is the heart and lung area. The situations are based on authentic hunting scenes and the shooter has to try to hit the target from various positions.
In addition to the bow and a number of arrows, the archer's usual equipment includes an arm guard to prevent painful bruises and hematomas caused by the bowstring snapping open. Finger protection for the hand that pulls the bowstring is also strongly recommended, especially for beginners.
