Hours of private surfing on the Internet, online shopping, long private conversations on the phone and with work colleagues or pseudo-meetings with colleagues. What at first glance might sound tempting and like a great day-to-day work, in reality has nothing to do with a fulfilling day-to-day work.

For a freely estimated quarter of all employees, everyday working life is determined by boredom, insufficient demands and disinterest.

Doctors speak of the so-called "Boreout Syndrome". A fact that causes numerous problems for the employee and is often quite expensive for the employer.

What is boreout exactly?

Nowadays most people complain of stress and overwhelming work. Many employees are therefore being treated more and more frequently against burnout.

However, it is not uncommon today that employees are treated for the opposite symptoms in their everyday work: being bored (boreout). This syndrome affects workers who are constantly under-challenged and bored at work.

Since boredom is not welcomed in the job and is not socially recognized, those affected often develop various strategies to hide their idleness. In this way, they show outwardly how stressed they actually are, type wildly on their keyboard and immediately switch screens when the boss is on their way.

But in reality the next vacation was booked or grouse was done. However, by hiding their problem, people with boreout syndrome prevent their situation from improving.

Break the devil's circle

It should be noted that those affected by boreout are by no means lazy workers. It is usually the fear of losing their job that they resort to the strategies listed above and simulate stress.

But hand on heart: In the end, as a person affected, you are just kidding yourself. The result of such action is usually: frustration, depression and a decrease in self-confidence.

As a person affected, you should rather consider how you can break this vicious circle. You could look around in your own work environment or in the department to see if you can support colleagues or the supervisor. Or maybe you have the opportunity to offer collaboration on various projects or you even have the opportunity to take on projects yourself.

As an employee, you should signal that you still have free capacities and would like to take on new challenges. If this strategy doesn't work, you can also consider changing jobs.

Not only stress and burnout in the professional world, but also boredom and insufficient demands, i.e. boreout, make you sick.

Consequences such as listlessness, tiredness, frustration and depression can spread. In the end, everyone needs fulfillment at work or at the end of a working day they like to go home satisfied.

If this is not the case at the moment or for a long time, one should strive to do something about it.
