Dogs as pets for children

When deciding to adopt a dog as a pet, it is essential that everyone in the family agrees. Dogs are living creatures with needs that must be met. To ensure that everyone can live together harmoniously in the long term, especially if there are small children in the household, there are a few things to consider before getting a dog.

Children and dogs as pets—does that work well?

Above all, it is important to realize that a dog can easily live to be 15 years old, and small breeds can live even longer.

There are a few questions to ask yourself: Can we take enough time off work to help the dog settle in with us? Where will the dog go when we are at work? Who will look after it when we are on vacation? Can we take it with us on vacation or perhaps to work?

What if the dog becomes seriously ill and needs surgery? Questions upon questions that should be answered with a clear conscience.

Which dog is the right pet?

Once you have made the decision to get a dog as a pet, you need to think about what kind of dog you would like to give a home to.

Breeds such as the Border Collie need a great deal of activity and exercise. Other breeds have a strong hunting instinct, while others are more laid-back representatives of the canine species.

If you decide to get a dog or puppy from a shelter or animal welfare organization, it would be good to see the dog beforehand. It is essential that the children come along too.

How does the animal react to children? Is the dog reserved or fearful, and how does it react to loud noises, which are commonplace with most children? Another option would be to find a reputable breeder of suitable pedigree dogs who can offer advice.

Rules for dogs and children

Once the new addition to the family has moved in, important rules must first be established that all family members must adhere to: parents, children, and, of course, the dog.

The dog needs a place of retreat that is off-limits to children, a blanket or a cave where it can rest. A place where it knows it will not be bothered by grabbing and possibly clumsy children's hands.

Children must learn to leave the dog alone when it voluntarily retreats and rests. It is also important for the dog to learn that children's toys are off limits and that they should not play too roughly. Puppy teeth can be incredibly sharp. And when children or owners say "that's enough," then that's really enough.

A good dog training school should be a companion for every family with a dog as a pet who wants a dog. Some dog training schools offer programs to help you find the right breed for your needs, as well as puppy or training courses in which children can also participate.

If you give this enough thought, you can enjoy a long and happy life with a loyal four-legged friend in your family.
