Eczema in children

It itches, you scratch. It itches again, you scratch even more. Until finally everything is sore and bloody. What is already difficult for adults, is almost impossible in children: stop scratching when this incredible itching in atopic dermatitis sets in.

But what is atopic eczema?

Around 15% of all children are affected by this disease, adults are usually less common. In atopic dermatitis - also called atopic eczema - forms a rash, coupled with dry skin, which itches terribly.

How to keep atopic eczema in children

Whether a disease is present, can be determined through the skin. If at least 3 main criteria and 3 minor criteria are met, a disease is pretty sure. Of course, in any case, the advice of a medical professional should be obtained!

Main criteria:

  • Strong itching
  • Typical distribution (elbows, knees, neck, abdomen)
  • An atopic family disease (asthma, allergies, atopic dermatitis)
  • Chronic disease

Minor criteria:

  • White skin reaction instead of a red skin reaction after scratching
  • Cradle cap
  • Paleness around the mouth
  • Itching through sweating
  • Incompatibility of wool clothing
  • Dermatitis around the nipples around

The cause of atopic dermatitis

One would like to think in the present time about all illnesses of this world - above all of such well-known illnesses - completely to be enlightened. Unfortunately for the suffering of many people is not so. Unlike, for example, an animal hair allergy in which one can say "Your child is allergic to horses"The cause must be meticulously found out.

One speaks here of triggers and influencing factors, which can trigger a thrust in the patient. In order to treat the disease, it does not help to alleviate the symptoms, but first and foremost, the causes must be resolved.

And the list of possible causes is long and complex:

  • Stress or psychological stress on the body (eg depression)
  • Allergies of any form (eg animal hair, pollen, house dust or food allergy)
  • the climate (eg extreme cold or drought)
  • Environmental influences such as exhaust gases
  • Wrong washing of the skin
  • Hormonal influences such as pregnancy
  • Disease of the intestine

You see on the basis of the few examples: the possible reasons are manifold. Helpful here is a "Disease diary" respectively. Write down meticulously what you have done, eaten or felt during the days.

A little hint: A "disease diary" can also be very helpful in other diseases such as acne. Based on this, it is possible to find out the cause here as well. An example of what really happened is: Let's call our person Mario. Mario never suffered from acne or pimples, but suddenly they were there. And they did not go away. No matter which means Mario has tried, whether grandma's home remedies, common products from the drugstore or special funds from the pharmacy, nothing helped.

At some point Mario started to keep a diary, what he ate when, what activities he went after and and and. In his later analysis, he found out that he had been getting his sandwiches from a new baker every morning for several months. Finally Mario avoided the baker on a trial basis for 2 weeks ... and what result was? Right, the pimples retreated until they finally disappeared completely. The baker must have used some ingredient that Mario's body was allergic to, and as a result, acne formed.

Soothing measures for atopic dermatitis

As already described, the first step is to eliminate the cause in order to combat the disease successfully. Sick children are always very sorry, especially if it's their own child and it screams and scrapes with itching. To at least soothe this, we have put together 5 tips that should relieve the itching, as well as the rash:

  1. Do not scratch!

As paradoxical as it sounds: do not scratch! Although it is already difficult for adults and will probably be almost impossible for children, scratching relieves the pain for a very short time, but then comes back with a huge boomerang effect. A true vicious cycle!

A little hint: To prevent unwanted scratching, for example, at night when sleeping, it is helpful to cut the fingernails short and wear cotton gloves.

  1. Black tea wrap

Make unrendered black tea wraps and place them on the affected areas. Through the tannins develops a protective layer through which the skin loses less moisture (remember, dry skin!) And the itching goes back accordingly.

  1. Regular creaming

When showering, do not turn the water too hot, as this dries out the skin. Then dry the skin instead of ruddy, dab with the towel rather, to avoid unnecessary strain on the skin. It is important here after the skin to re-moisturize and cream.
