Anyone who decides to keep a spider as a pet must know that it is not a cuddly toy. The spider can be placed on your hand from time to time, but the animal mostly prefers to stay undisturbed in the terrarium. If your hand reaches into the terrarium, this causes stress in the spiders and the animal can bite.
Keeping a spider as a pet

The terrarium in which the spider is kept must have a base area of at least 30 x 40 centimeters. The height should be up to 50 centimeters. The animal should not be fed during the molting process.
Otherwise, the spiders' diet consists of insects and live arachnids, such as grasshoppers, which can be bought in specialist shops. There should also always be enough water available. Keeping spiders is quite easy. The animals do not need too humid heat and like bark mulch as a substrate.
Which spiders are suitable to keep?
The most popular species of spider as pets are the red Chilean tarantula, the red-footed tarantula and the Mexican red-knee tarantula. The former grows to five to six centimeters in size and is peaceful and robust. The red Chilean tarantula grows very slowly and pauses eating for long periods of time. The preferred food of this house spider is insects and nestling mice. The peace-loving red-footed spider is a tree tarantula and can live up to 15 years. The preferred food of this species of spider is grasshoppers or cockroaches.
The Mexican red-knee tarantula is also very popular as a pet and is particularly suitable for beginners as a first-time spider. It is fed with crickets or grasshoppers.
How much do spiders cost?
A tarantula costs up to 200 euros, depending on the species and size. The terrarium required for the spider costs between ten and fifty euros, depending on the size.
Substrate costs around three euros and 15 liters of bark mulch require an investment of ten euros. Live food animals are available at a price of 1,50 to five euros per pack. Ten grasshoppers cost around ten euros.
Spider as pets advantages and disadvantages

- Need little space to live
- Watching spiders is fascinating
- Affordable attitude
- Educational pet
A small disadvantage
Many people are disgusted by spiders and have a real arachnophobia. If you have a spider as a pet, you have to expect that visitors who come home will be disgusted by the spiders that "run around".
The word spider alone causes extreme discomfort and panic in many people. Silently crawling hairy "creatures" on the floor make the hairs on the back of some people's necks stand up. For this reason, you should not always mention to visitors that you have a spider as a pet.
