Image creation through artificial intelligence – curse or blessing?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving technology that allows us to create images in ways that seemed impossible just a short time ago. But who questions the benefits, risks and limitations of AI image creation and its impact on our everyday lives?  To be clear: up to now, we have not used any AI for text or images on this site and are rather critical of the matter!

Image creation with artificial intelligence – curse or blessing?

How can AI help us create innovative images while uncovering uncertainties about potential legal and ethical implications?

When we look at images in the media today, we are often fascinated by the quality and beauty of the images. But are we always aware that many of these images are created by Artificial Intelligence (AI)? AI image creation has made tremendous progress in recent years and is used in many fields, from medicine to art. But as with any technology, there are risks and limitations that we must consider. But let’s first clarify the question: what is AI imaging and how does it work?

What is AI imaging?

Everyone has heard of AI, but how aware are we that AI is already a big part of image creation on a daily basis? This technology uses artificial intelligence to generate images created by humans. There are different methods of how AI image creation works, but basically it uses algorithms to recognize patterns and structures in existing images and create new images from them.

This technology is already being used in various fields, such as art, the film industry and advertising. But there are also risks and limitations in the application of AI image generation, such as the possibility that the generated images may be inaccurate or even flawed. It is important that we are aware of how AI image generation works and what impact it can have on our society.

Expanding the boundaries of creativity with AI?

This is roughly what the advertising slogans of the AI industry sound like: "With AI, we want to expand the boundaries of creativity and take the human imagination to a new level. With AI, unique and fascinating images can be created that inspire our imagination and take us to new worlds. We can play with the magic of technology and enrich our works of art with unparalleled beauty and depth."

But is this really the case? We must be aware that AI image creation can also have negative effects.

For example, fake images can be created that are used to spread false information or discredit people. Artistic skills and jobs could also be lost due to the use of AI.

It is important that we as a society have a debate about how we want to deal with technology and what regulations are necessary. We should not just blindly follow the magic of technology but actively engage with it.

Ultimately, it comes down to this: what kind of world do we want to create? A world full of fascinating works of art but also potentially manipulative images, or a world in which human creativity is valued and technological developments are in line with ethical values?

We should not only answer these questions on an individual level but also discuss and decide on them politically. This is the only way we can ensure that the development of AI-based images contributes positively to shaping our future.

Limits of AI image creation

When it comes to AI image creation, there are many benefits, but also some limitations. While AI systems are capable of creating realistic images, they struggle to express complex emotions or subtle nuances in human faces.

Another issue is that AI systems are often trained on existing data, meaning they may incorporate biases or stereotypes into their imagery. One example of this is the use of AI in law enforcement, where AI systems may show racial bias in their decisions based on their training data. It is important to recognise and consider these limitations when we use AI in imagery. We need to ensure that we do not use AI systems uncontrollably and that we are aware of the potential risks.

What legal limits are there to AI image creation?

What is often overlooked when using new technologies are legal issues. After all, the data for new images comes from somewhere? And what about the rights of those who created these images? Or more generally, what are the legal limits of AI image creation?

There are a few important aspects to consider here. Firstly, it is important to know that AI-generated images are protected by copyright just like any other images. This means that the images cannot be used without the consent of the author.

In addition, there are other legal aspects that must be taken into account when creating AI images, such as the right to one's own image or data protection law. It is therefore important to inform yourself about the legal framework before using AI-generated images in order to avoid possible legal consequences.

So, what can we finally say about AI image creation?

It is a fascinating technology with endless possibilities, but also with some risks and limitations. The benefits range from saving time to creating works of art that would not otherwise be possible. However, the risks are not negligible either, especially in relation to the use of AI-generated images in advertising or political propaganda.

It is important that we are aware that these images do not always correspond to reality and that they can be manipulated. We must also be aware that artificial intelligence systems are not perfect and that they can make mistakes.

It is therefore important that we continue to explore the limitations and risks of AI imaging and strive to use it responsibly and ethically.
