Garden borders can fulfil many tasks. There are also just as many different types of construction available. And depending on what you want to achieve by demarcating your garden from the street or your neighbour, the design of the garden border can be less complex or quite complex to implement:
Types of garden borders
If you want it to be very airy and the boundary is only for visual reasons, then a few stones or posts at the corners of the property are enough.

A row of plants along the property boundary visually frames the entire area without disturbing the view into the distance.
If you allow the plants to grow together, they will soon form a hedge. Depending on their height, they can serve as a privacy screen and windbreak. And privacy screens not only mean protection from unwanted glances when sunbathing, but also potentially a privacy screen for inside the house. If your plants are thorny, they also ward off unwanted intruders. Hedges provide additional habitat for insects and small animals, such as birds. But they also require a lot of care and time to grow.
fences There are countless variations. They can be as airy as a cattle fence, wire mesh fence, metal fence or wooden lattice fence (e.g. the classic hunter's fence). If you close them completely with boards or panels from the hardware store or garden center, this airiness is lost, but you gain privacy and wind protection.
stonewall, whether high or low (small walls), offer the most solid protection. Whether made of loosely layered (natural walls), "mortared" natural stones or bricks. Also cast from concrete. In the front garden it is the small wall. In the garden "at the back" it is the wall. It offers the greatest protection from wind, sight and noise.
Many exotic options are still possible, such as old railway sleepers, profiled metal sheets, etc. All variants can also be covered in greenery, so the garden can continue to grow vertically. However, they cannot replace the natural hedge.
Which type of garden edging suits my garden?
In the front garden, the edges of lawns or flower beds are usually sufficient, and a small wall or a low fence are also sufficient.
Does the city garden behind the house perhaps need visual protection from the neighbors, which also makes intrusion difficult (e.g. wall).
A garden in the country, with or without a house, should not have its good view obstructed. An airy solution is a good idea. Do you want to keep animal intruders away or let your pets run around freely (see below)?
The combination of many factors makes the choice difficult. The ideal garden border will rarely exist.
Think about the pets
In general, garden gates or doors should be as high as a wall, hedge or fence and should be flush with the ground at the bottom. Irregular terrain often does not allow this. If the terrain is undulating or sloping, a threshold must be installed. This serves as a stop or connection to the bottom edge of the door or gate.
Dogs are not great climbers, but they do have enormous jumping power. A dachshund is less so than a trained German shepherd, of course. Therefore, the height should be adapted to the breed in question. They have strong guarding and protective instincts. If you get too close to their territory, they will bark and bark loudly. To avoid these reactions, an opaque construction that also reduces noise is recommended. A wall would also be ideal to prevent passers-by from being frightened.
Invisible dog fences that work with electric shock impulses through the collar are prohibited in Germany!
Cats are climbing artists and can jump to great heights - even from a standing position. A tree near the property boundary or a mesh fence can help them climb. They can overcome even the highest obstacles. An inward overhang at the top of the fence or wall can prevent this. The same can be said for a smooth plastic pipe that offers no grip. Both options can be supplemented by applying a low electrical voltage.
For poultry farming, a simple net construction on posts (H = at least 120 cm) is sufficient.
Think about invading wildlife
Wild boars can only be repelled by solid stone walls or special game fences. Game fences are available in standard heights of 80 / 100 / 120 / 130 / 150 / 160 / 180 (cm) with different mesh sizes.
The rule of thumb for fence height is:
Deer at least 180 cm
Roe deer 150 cm height
Rabbits and hares 80 cm high and 100 cm deep in the ground
