Dog as a pet for children

If you decide to adopt a dog as a pet, everyone in the family should definitely agree to it. The dog is a living being that has needs that must be met. To ensure that living together works out in the long term, especially if there are small children present, there are a few things to consider before purchasing one.

Children and dogs as pets – is that a good idea?

Above all, you have to be aware that a dog can easily live to be 15 years old, and in the case of small breeds, even much longer.

There are a few questions to ask yourself: can we take long enough vacation to get the dog used to living with us? Where will the dog go when we are working? Who will look after it while we are on vacation? Can we take it with us on vacation or perhaps to work?

What if the dog becomes seriously ill and needs an operation? Questions upon questions that should be answered with a clear conscience.

Which dog is the right one as a pet?

If you have made the decision to get a dog as a pet, you need to think about what kind of dog you want to give a home.

Breeds such as the Border Collie need a lot of activity and exercise. Other breeds have a strong hunting instinct, while others are more laid-back representatives of the dog species.

If you decide to get a dog or puppy from an animal shelter or animal welfare organization, it would be good if you could see the dog beforehand. The children must be there too.

How does the animal react to children? Is the dog reserved or fearful? How does it react to loud noises, which are commonplace with most children? Another option would be a good breeder of suitable pedigree dogs who can give you advice.

Rules for dogs and children

Once the new addition to the family has moved in, important rules must first be established that all family members must follow: parents, children and, of course, the dog.

The dog needs a place to retreat that is off-limits to children, a blanket or a cave where he can rest. A place where he knows he will not be harassed by grabbing and possibly clumsy children's hands.

The children must learn that they must leave the dog alone when it voluntarily withdraws and rests. It is also important for the dog to learn that the children's toys are off limits and that it should not be played with too roughly. Sharp puppy teeth can be a terrible pain. And when children or owners say "that's enough now," then it really is enough.

A good dog school must be the companion of every family with a dog as a pet who wants a dog. Some dog schools offer programs to find the right breed for your needs and puppy or training courses in which children can also participate.

If you give this enough thought, you can live a long and happy life with a loyal four-legged friend in the family.
