Why do mosquito bites itch unbearably – Health

We're starting to get plagued by annoying mosquito bites again and I'm wondering: Why the hell do mosquito bites itch so much? And why is it always me when the rest of the family doesn't have a single one!

Why the hell do mosquito bites itch so much?

I explained to my daughter some time ago that mosquitoes have little pincers on their proboscis that they can use to rip open our skin. But it doesn't actually hurt at all and we often don't even notice the bite.

The problem arises when the mosquito injects its saliva into the wound as a blood thinner so that it can drink without any problems. However, this saliva contains proteins that can trigger allergic reactions in our body. Depending on how sensitive our immune system is, different reactions can occur. Some people only have a small swelling and a slight itch at the bite site, while others have to deal with severe allergic reactions.

What can you do about it?

However, there are some things you can do to avoid mosquito bites or at least minimize their effects. For example, you should wear light-colored clothing and avoid perfume - both of which magically attract mosquitoes. Using insect sprays or creams can also help.

So it is best to prevent and protect yourself – because who wants to have unnecessary itchy hives on their body? Depending on how susceptible we are to allergies, the reaction can vary in severity.

Avoiding standing water in the area can also help, as these are often breeding grounds for mosquito larvae.

But I have already been stung

The best method is to cool the sting immediately. That is also the reason why people say you should put spit on the sting - because it has a cooling effect on the skin. And you always have a little spit on hand. Alternatively, you can of course also get relief with a cold compress

If you have already been bitten, home remedies such as onions or vinegar can also relieve the itching. There are also special ointments and creams for mosquito bites available in pharmacies. Another good option is products with essential oils, which you can buy as a roll-on in pharmacies - as a preventative measure.

In any case, do not scratch! Scratching not only increases the itching, but also increases the risk of infection. Scratching only causes the histamine that our body releases to spread further under our skin. This can cause the inflammation to spread and the sting to become even more painful.

With a little caution and the right measures, the risk of a mosquito bite can be minimized - but if it does happen, you need help quickly! And the next time you are attacked by a mosquito, you know what to do!

PS: But I think I'll still continue using my anti-mosquito spray to keep these pests away!
