The United States of America (USA) is a federal republic consisting of 50 states located in North America between Canada and Mexico, while Alaska is in the far northwestern part of North America, and Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The flag of the United States, often referred to as the American flag or the U.S. flag, is a symbol of national pride and identity. It consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with six white, which represent the original thirteen colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the U.S. In the top left corner, there is a blue field (known as the union) with fifty small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows.

The national anthem of the United States is „The Star-Spangled Banner“. The lyrics come from „Defence of Fort M’Henry,“ a poem written by Francis Scott Key after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships in Baltimore Harbor during the War of 1812. The poem was later set to the tune of a popular British song by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men’s social club in London. „The Star-Spangled Banner“ was recognized for official use by the U.S. Navy in 1889 and by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931, which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.

The role of the United States in the world has been significant since the early 20th century, and especially after the end of World War II, when the U.S. emerged as one of the two superpowers along with the Soviet Union, a status that lasted until the latter’s dissolution in 1991. The U.S. has a leading role in various fields such as economy, military, culture, technology, and diplomacy. The country is a founding member of the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Organization of American States (OAS), NATO, and other international organizations. It is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and home to the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.
However, the role of the United States is nuanced and is subject to significant debate and varied opinions, reflecting its complex interactions with other nations and its influence on international relations, economic development, and global issues such as climate change, peacekeeping, and human rights advocacy.
